Lauterbrunnen Valley

I'm pretty sure that all five of us would agree--there's no place on Earth like the Lauterbrunnen Valley. When we arrived, the first vista you see is a waterfall and Alpine cabin-filled valley with steep cliffs on either side. On the left cliff, we took a train up to visit the small town of Wengen; to the right, we took a cable car up to our home base of Murren.

The Lauterbrunnen Valley is a dream for nature-lovers. You can go down to the valley floor and hike for miles along icy streams and fields with dairy cows. Up in the cliffs and mountains are high-altitude towns with cozy shops and seemingly hundreds of trailheads for hiking adventures.

We felt like we walked into a dream! One where the butter and cheese was really, really good.

You could probably throw a rock and hit something incredibly awesome in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. But here are some of the things we found really fun!

  • We took the cable cars up to the Schilthorn, a mountain peak with a 360 degree revolving restaurant called Piz Gloria on top (reservations encouraged). It's the filming location of the James Bond movie, All the Queen's Men, and includes a James Bond museum.

  • Trying bakeries is always a fun activity! We got delicious sausage rolls at a small bakery in Wengen.

  • Hiking is amazing in Lauterbrunnen Valley! We tried some trails near Murren, Wengen, and in the Valley. The paved valley trail is long but probably the easiest. If you get tired, you can flag down a bus that runs back and forth through the valley.

  • We didn't go to Trummelbach Falls this year, but we have in the past. It's a steep staircase climb into a fissure in the mountain with an amazing view. If you'd prefer not to experiment with heights, I love the cafe at the base of the falls.
