Füssen

One of my favorite things about Füssen is that it feels like a fairytale. The Bavarian town of Füssen is near the home of King Ludwig's Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles, both of which tell his life story beautifully. While not a popular king with the aristocracy of the time, Ludwig was beloved by the people. His story, while tragic, has beauty that adds to the magic of the castles, valleys, and forests.

Some of the most interesting things to do in Fussen are, of course, the two castles. There's also a historical fortress in the town, a park, and stunning souvenir shops. According to our guide, Fussen also is the home to Rick Steve's favorite ice cream shop! I love that Fussen is so easy to walk around, feels safe, and has an amazing Thai restaurant (Thuy Golden Stäbchen). If you like Thai food, I can't emphasize this enough! To my knowledge, they're not listed on Google Maps

Füssen
highlights

Füssen and the surrounding area is warm, friendly, and has a magical Bavarian fairytale feel to it. Some of our favorite things seem simple, but were so fun!

  • Eating at Hotel Ludwig's restaurant, where I got cheese spaetzel (left). It was amazing!

  • This trip, we visited Hohenschwangau, the less popular of the two castles. It was stunning and a great glimpse into King Ludwig's growing-up years and private life.

  •  Chris, Benjamin, and Isabelle are fans of bike riding. You can ride for hours and hours around Füssen on regular or eBikes that are easy to rent. Also, one of the most popular bike shops has a surprisingly amazing souvenir store.

  • Exploring the park behind Hohes Schloss fortress in little Füssen is peaceful. While the fortress is interesting, the park feels like a shaded, quiet retreat with folks out walking their dogs and exploring castle ruins.

  • While it was closed for a holiday this trip, in the past we've gone to Vinzenzmurr, a local deli, and loved the food. We also have enjoyed shopping at the mall Rossman's, but it was also closed.
